When I first started this project as a hobby about eight years ago it ran successfully on a standard hosting account with little cost. As the project has grown,
and more and more people are using the translator that approach has become impractical.
Each time someone makes a request to translate a word, a vast amount of data is searched and a significant amount of computing power is consumed.
On occasions there are 3000 unique visitors per day and at times 35+ concurrent users.
This happened to the Old English Translator on a couple of occasions. I moved the web site from provider to provider hoping to keep the project alive.
It became apparent that I faced a simple choice, reduce the usage or find a computing platform that could support it's resource needs. I decided to rent a Virtual Private Server (VPS) from Heart Internet on which to run the website.
To quote from their website:
'Combining the latest generation of Dell PowerEdge servers, Intel Xeon processors,
and RAID-10 arrays of high-performance SAS disks with our bespoke systems, we’ve created one of the UK's most advanced virtual server platforms'
I am very proud of the fact that the product is useful to so many people and flattered to receive positive comments from some acedemic institutions. I do not want to see the project die
due to the financial cost of this VPS. To try and recoup the cost I considered renting advertising space on the site. I have been contacted by organisations wishing to rent advertising space.
I do not want to do this and it would detract from the use of the product, I would like to keep it pure.
So I have added a donate button. if you use this website regularly, please consider making a small paypal donation to help me cover the costs of the VPS and to encourage me to keep going,
supporting the project and adding features.
The CPU usage at peak times already exceeds 60% and I would like to be in a position to add more memory and CPU power to the VPS.
